Summer heat today, with strong storms Saturday

FRIDAY: It’s another summer-like day across Mid-Missouri, as temperatures are climbing into the low to mid 90s this afternoon under very humid conditions. Heat indices will be the main concern, as we see our first true taste of summer, with heat indices in the mid to upper 90s. Winds will remain out of the west up to 8 mph. UV index will be 11 so make sure you protect your skin and eyes throughout your Friday.

TONIGHT: We will keep a close eye on a developing storm system to the northwest through the evening hours as it could drop into mid-Missouri by Saturday morning. As that system moves south it will weaken, but we could see some scattered showers early on Saturday morning north of I-70. Most of Mid-Missouri will see clear skies through the night with mild temperatures as lows drop towards 70.

EXTENDED: The ABC17 Stormtrack Weather Team has issued a Weather Alert Day for Saturday. We’re tracking an MCS developing across Nebraska late Friday night, which will track into Mid-Missouri through the morning Saturday. While initially a few strong storms are possible in extreme northwestern parts of the region, the overall trend is that the morning will just feature decaying storms. However, as we head into the afternoon hours outflow boundaries from the decaying storms will reignite along a cold front in a fairy unstable environment. It’s here where we are going to have to watch for the potential for strong to severe storms into the late afternoon and early evening. Right now the SPC is highlighting most of Mid-Missouri having a decent chance for severe storms with a slight risk in place. This brings the primary concern for damaging winds and large hail upon initiation of those storms, before the threat shifts to damaging winds, however updates may be needed as severe risk could increase with more data coming in. It’s quite possible that a few tornadoes could be a concern as well as the the initial storm mode will likely be of the super cell nature. Storms are expected to clear out by late Saturday night, with dry and fairly seasonably conditions to return by Sunday. All of next week looks to be dry with rising temperatures back into the upper 80s by Thursday.
