Columbia group scheduled to give used computers to eligible families on Saturday

City of Columbia officials announced that 40 used computers will be distributed to families on Saturday.

The city, the Voluntary Action Center and the Downtown Optimist Club partner each year to provide the used computers and equipment to eligible residents as part of the Homes For Computers Program.

The computers are given away to individuals enrolled in the VAC programs, who applied and were found eligible for the computer giveaway.

The computers will be distributed by the Downtown Optimist Club between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. at the Optimist Club building in the 1200 block of Grand Avenue.

Boone County deputies will be at the event to provide training on internet safety.

ABC 17 previously reported that the Homes for Computers Program was approved by the City Council in December of 2003. This year’s program will bring the number of donated computers to more than 530.
