Property owner may lose home if action not taken
City officials met Friday to discuss one man’s house on West Boulevard that they say does not meet city standards.
After many attempts to make contact with the property owner, code enforcement specialist David Brochhouse said it’s an unsafe environment in which to live.
“The condition of the property, it’s in very poor condition. It’s unsafe to the tenants. It’s a nuisance property in the fact that it’s open to the elements,” Brochouse said.
Asbestos has been found in the residence.
ABC 17 News visited the home and spoke with neighbors who said the property owner seems to be a nice man and believe he is a disabled veteran who needs help.
A public hearing took place where the homeowner could’ve stated his case, but the homeowner never showed up.
Based of the information given to ABC 17 News, it appears the property owner is not living in the home, but neighbors said they see him show up from time to time.
City officials said they can only hope he is somewhere safe.
The City of Columbia will be taking many factors into consideration before it decides if the house will be demolished, but at this time it looks as if that is what’s going to happen.
