Firefighters identify man who died in Jefferson City structure fire
Jefferson City firefighters have identified the man that was killed in the structure fire on Wednesday morning.
Firefighters first responded to a residential fire on Walsh Street just after 4 a.m. on Wednesday. Crews said when they arrived, they saw flames visible from the roof of the home and confirmed one resident had died.
Firefighters said Joseph Alas, 66, died of asphyxiation caused by smoke inhalation.
The woman who was saved from the fire, Balanca Acosta, age 67, remains in stable but critical condition at a local hospital.
Officials said the cause of the fire remains undetermined.
