Health officials warn of common, but preventable, Labor Day injuries
The weather forecast for Labor Day shows warm temperatures and sunny skies will allow people to enjoy the holiday outside.
Doctors at University Hospital and MU Healthcare said they see the same type of injuries every year during holidays like Labor Day, such as burns from grilling or injuries from car crashes.
Columbia Fire Department officials said some ways to ensure safe grilling are to wear tighter clothing, properly dispose of charcoal by dumping it into a metal bucket and putting water on top and to make sure not to leave the grill unattended.
Dr. Christopher Sampson, MU Healthcare, said the hospital usually receives patients during Labor Day weekend with minor injuries such as sprains and strains as a result of sporting activities.
Sampson also said the easiest steps to stay safe during the holiday weekend is to not drink and drive and always wear a seat belt in a vehicle.
The official number of driving while intoxicated arrests are not available because the Missouri State Highway Patrol’s counting period does not end until 11:59 p.m. Monday.
At this time, troopers report at least 85 DWI arrests across the state since 5 p.m. Friday. Troopers also have made at least 14 arrests for boating while intoxicated.
At this time, eight people have died in car crashes across the state during the weekend.
