Storm damage: Eldon resident hoping tree doesn’t fall onto home

Memorial Day weekend is off to a stormy start as parts of mid-Missouri saw strong wind and hail Saturday afternoon.

ABC 17 News was down in Eldon, Missouri in Miller County after reports that large trees were knocked down by strong winds.

Eldon resident, Ken Fowler, was on his way home from work in Rolla when he kept hearing tornado warnings go off on his phone.

“I heard it at least three times on my way home from work,” Fowler said.

Fowler said once he got into Eldon, he saw trees knocked down at a nearby park and started to get nervous.

“I was a little shocked when I rounded the corner and saw that, because it was so close to my house,” Fowler said.

Little did he know, a tree in front of his home was split in half one half hanging towards his neighbors shed, the other hanging over the roof of his bedroom.

“Believe it or not, my landlord came over here about 20 minutes before this happened to check on the tree,” Fowler said. “After the wind he came back 20 minutes later, and this is what we have.”

Miller County experienced more than 600 customers without power at one point.

Several other large trees were knocked down due to the wind, including one at Rock Island Park.
