Three in custody following shooting in Jefferson City
Police responded to the area of Monroe St. and Dunklin St. Wednesday morning after several calls of gunshots fired.
Investigators said the callers said three men left the scene on foot after firing a gun at the victim, who left in a different direction.
Witnesses were able to provide police with an adequate description, and investigators said they found the three suspects about two blocks away in a church parking lot.
The three men immediately surrendered to police when officers arrived.
The Jefferson City Police Department recovered several shell casings at the scene and a handgun from where the arrests were made.
Capt. Doug Shoemaker, with Jefferson City police said he credits the community’s cooperation with the department.
“In this case, it was because of calls and witness statements, and that’s exactly what we need,” Shoemaker said. “We can’t be everywhere at one time, so having that quickly available to us was one of the primary reasons we were able to take these guys into custody so fast.”
The three men are in the Cole County Jail and have not yet been identified by police.
Shoemaker said the department is still looking for the victim.
