Jefferson City council votes to not change property tax rate

The Jefferson City Council voted to not raise the property tax rate for the 2017 fiscal year Monday.

The property tax rate will stay at about 56 cents per $100 of value.

Most of the money generated by property taxes will go toward the city’s general fund which is expected to be more than $4 million.

The rest, about $850,000, will go toward the firefighter retirement fund.

Even though the city is not raising property taxes, it will will more money in the coming fiscal year. The assessed value in the city went up by more than $19.5 million since 2015.

The city council was also set to vote on the FY2017 budget Monday, but it was put on the informal calendar.

The council will take up a vote when the budget committee finalizes the budget.
