Rain could mean higher chances of E. Coli in lakes this weekend

More swimmers will soon start using Columbia lakes and pools as we head into the Memorial Day holiday weekend, but the high chances of rain could mean higher chances of E. Coli in the water.

The Missouri Department of Natural Resources says that with heavier rain, lakes see an increase of E. Coli. E. Coli is a bacteria commonly found in the intestines and feces of warm-blooded animals. If swimmers swallow enough of the contaminated water it could make them sick. Symptoms include dirrhea, loss of appetite and fever.

To prevent a higher risk of E. Coli, scientists say to always pick up trash around the area.

The Missouri Department of Natural Resources says they will be testing the water quality on a weekly basis, and they advise checking the water conditions before heading to any beach.
