Trash day to change for some people in Columbia
Later this month, around 2,700 Columbia homes will see a change in the days their trash is collected by the city. The change is happening the week of April 25th; at that time, 2,000 Wednesday collections will move to Tuesday, and 1,700 Thursday collections will move to Wednesday. The changes mainly affect areas in the south and southwest part of the city.
You can find a map of the affected neighborhoods, provided by the City of Columbia, by clicking this link.
Not every home on the Wednesday or Thursday collection day routes will be affected. Every home affected by the change will get a letter from the city, and door hangers will be placed as well, notifying the residents of the change. Only those homes whose collection days are changing will get notifications.
In October 2015, city officials identified several unbalanced trash collection routes, meaning a larger- or smaller-than-average number of people were having their trash picked up. The collection day changes are an attempt to fix some of those imbalances.
Changes or talk of modifications were delayed until the petition over roll cart trash collection went up for a vote in March.
