Final Push of Strong Storm System May Result in Freezing Rain for Some Monday Morning

The strong storm system that has brought Mid-Missouri extreme rainfall amounts will finally begin making its exit tonight into tomorrow. Its track out of our area, however, will not be a quiet one, as it is expected to bring several hazardous weather threats to our area overnight and into tomorrow.

One such threat will be ice accumulations. Much cooler surface temperatures near or just below the freezing mark are expected to usher into northwestern Missouri overnight. On the other hand, at levels in the atmosphere right above the surface, temperatures above freezing will begin to push into the region as an upper level low moves northeastward from Texas to the Great Lakes region. With warmer temperatures aloft and cooler air near the surface, freezing rain will be possible tomorrow morning for areas mainly west of HWY 65.

0.1″ to 0.25″ of ice accumulations are expected, with heaviest amounts to the far north and west. By Monday afternoon, the freezing rain is anticipated to make the changeover to snow.
