Commissioners work on 2016 Cole County budget

Cole County officials are working to finalize the 2016 budget.

The county plans to spend about two-thirds of its more than $64 million in funds.

Commissioners met Wednesday morning to discuss ongoing transportation needs, as well as employee pay raises.

Monday, the Cole County sheriff asked the commission for extra funding to raise the pay of his department staff.

“Our salaries are so tight as it is. We don’t have a whole lot of people making six figures. I don’t think we have anybody making six figures except for the prosecutor,” said Commissioner Kris Scheperle. “There’s just not a whole lot of room in there to have a range and with so many different positions, it makes it tough.”

Commissioners have until Jan. 10th to approve a financial plan.
