NEW GOES R Series Satellite Launches in 1 yr
In one year, the GOES R Series satellite will be launched. This will help improve forecasts, and help detect severe storms earlier. Here’s how a Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite works. It orbits with earth, approximately 22,000 miles above the surface over a fixed point. Currently, GOES satellitescollect data over those fixed points, every 30minutes. This can delay accuracy and warning times, especially when severe weather is imminent. The new GOES R Series will allow data to be collected every 5 minutes, and as often as every 30 seconds when severe weather is occuring! This means, early detection, and earlier warnings. In addition to earlier detection, resolution will be greater, and a large spatial coverage will be collected.
