Malicious malware can solicit money from smartphone users

Scammers are using malware to extort money from unsuspecting smartphone users. This virus, known as “ransomware,” freezes up your phone until you pay to unlock it. Ransomware can be downloaded by visiting a malicious or compromised website, clicking on a malicious advertisement/link, or opening a malicious attachment via email. It can also be downloaded through a social media site such as Facebook or Instagram, by clicking on links for free giveaways or viral videos. You should always use caution on social media.

Here is how the ransomware scam works:

You are surfing the web on your computer or smartphone and it suddenly freezes. A screen appears saying that your computer or device is locked due to a violation of federal laws. This pop-up can look like it is coming from an official law enforcement agency or the FBI by using their name and insignia.

According to the screen, you need to pay a fine in order to unlock your device. These fines typically range from $300 – $500 and need to be paid via Green Dot MoneyPak cards or Bitcoin. This is a scam and once you hand over the information, your money is gone.

Just like malware, it can invade your computer and smartphone if you click on a bad link or download an infected file.

Here are some tips to protect yourself:

-Always back up your data, both computers and smartphones
-Treat your smartphone as you would a computer

-Only download apps through an official app store
