Gov. Nixon creates Ferguson Commission in advance of grand jury decision

Governor Nixon Tuesday spoke at the Missouri History Museum in St. Louis as the state awaits the grand jury’s decision on Ferguson Police Officer Darren Wilson.

Nixon was joined by multiple state lawmakers. He introduced the commission he said will work toward a better future for the city of Ferguson.

Shortly after the unrest in Ferguson and the police response to it, Nixon said he would appoint this commission.

The Ferguson Commission is made up of 16 members, all from the St. Louis area.

Nixon said it’s a diverse group of people charged with making recommendations on how to make S. Louis a fairer and better place to live.

“Other most important work the commission accomplishes will not be what is written on sheets of paper or a website, it will be seen and felt in our daily lives as concrete changes that are brought about in our institutions, our workplaces, our communities, and in our interactions with one another,” said Nixon.

The commission will issue a report with policy recommendations in regard to law enforcement, racial, and ethnic relations among other areas.
