More than 36 million Americans predicted to travel Memorial Day weekend

AAA predicts that 36.1 million Americans will travel for Memorial Day weekend.

They say that is the highest number of travelers since 2005.

To help traffic the Missouri Department of Transportation is stopping all construction projects including the bridge work on Highway 63 and Stadium Boulevard.

All of the projects will pick back up again on Tuesday after Memorial Day.

However, even without orange cones on the road backing up traffic, delays will be inevitable.

“The weather is supposed to be nice so everyone is going to get out in large amounts so there is going to be a lot of traffic on the highways,” said Sgt. Paul Reinsch with the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

According to AAA at least eight in ten people will be driving this weekend.

The reason for possibly record breaking numbers on the road they said is because of the harsh cold winter.

It has more people wanting to make sure they get in that Memorial Day weekend vacation.

Starting Friday, expect to see a trooper every 20 miles on those major highway like Interstate 70,63 and 54.

“We will have at least one trooper and they are there to promote highway safety and they are also there to help stranded motorist get back on their way in case they do have problems,” said Reinsch.

Sgt. Reinsch told ABC 17 News those troopers are also watching closely for impaired drivers since it is a holiday weekend.
