55 schools under Title IX sex abuse investigation

The U.S. Department of Education released a list of 55 schools under investigation into how they handle sexual assaults.

The University of Missouri which is currently under its own investigation did not make the list.

Thursday’s release came two days after a white house task force promised greater government transparency on Title IX sexual assault in higher education.

Title IX prohibits gender discrimination at schools that receive federal funds.

No Missouri colleges made it on the list.

The 55 schools are under investigation because of complaints received by the U.S. Department of Education’s office for Civil Rights.

The primary goal of these investigations is to make sure all higher education institutions are compliant with federal law.

“Even though we are not part of this particular group being investigated here. We’re doing a lot right now and have been for several weeks,” said University of Missouri Chancellor Bowen Loftin.

The University of Missouri system is currently handling its own investigation into how it handles sexual assaults.

The Sasha Menu Corey case sparked the internal look.

She was the MU swimmer that claimed she was sexually assaulted and later took her own life.

Last month all four University of Missouri campuses took inventory of all their sexual assault resources available to students and faculty.

Now they are working to see what more is needed even without a federal investigation.
