Vandals destroy religious statue at Helias Catholic High School in Jefferson City

Vandals overnight destroyed a religious statue at Helias Catholic High School, according to school officials.

A post on the school’s Facebook page shows the toppled statue of Mary, donated by Christian Brothers in Glencoe, Mo.

The school’s president, Didier Aur, says this latest incident is the second act of anti-Catholic vandalism at Helias in recent weeks.

A few weeks ago, someone spray painted an upside down cross and demonic symbols on the school’s field house.

School officials tell ABC 17 News they are uncertain if the vandalism is by an angry student, crosstown rival, or someone who hates Catholics.

Some people associated with the school have asked about adding additional security cameras, but Aur says there are more important things to use cameras for.

“We have security cameras all around here, but they are for the entrances and to protect our students, not so much to protect our building,” said Aur. “We need to protect our kids, our facility, protect parents that come here and we want to take care of that.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact police.
