Columbia man sentenced after reaching plea deal in deadly shooting

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
A Boone County judge sentenced a Columbia man to 27 years in prison Friday for his role in a deadly shooting.
According to public court records, Malik D. Townsend, 23, pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of second-degree murder at a hearing on Friday morning. Prosecutors previously charged Townsend with first-degree murder in the shooting death of Jakob Cole in February 2021.
Cole died at a hospital after he was shot on Feb. 15 at a home in the 4700 block of West Millbrook Drive. According to court documents, Cole was shot after an argument over $40.
The Boone County Prosecuting Attorney's Office has also charged Tyreese O. Perkins with first-degree murder and armed criminal action in Cole's death.

A court hearing for Perkins is scheduled for Monday afternoon. Court documents allege Perkins helped arrange the meeting with Cole then told detectives he was not at the shooting scene.
