Typical December weather in Mid-Missouri

As we head toward the Winter Solstice which occurs at 11:48 PM CST December 21st, average temperatures continue to drop. By the end of the month our 30 year average high is only 38 with an average low of 21. We will lose an additional 10 minutes of daylight this month.

The warmest temperature recorded in December at the Columbia Regional Airport is 76 in 1991 while the lowest occurred in 1901 with 23 below zero.

The average 30 year snowfall is 4.4 inches but in recent years we have gotten as high as 8.4 inches in 2010 with 6 inches falling on Christmas Eve. The highest amount of snow recorded in December is 17.8 inches in 1973.
