Columbia police detain two teens in connection to Wednesday shooting

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Columbia police say two teens were taken into custody Thursday for the shooting in the 200 block of E. Sexton Road that left a 17-year-old girl injured Wednesday.

Columbia police took one teen into custody for first-degree assault, tampering with a witness and armed criminal action. Columbia police took the second teen for first-degree assault, unlawful use of a weapon and armed criminal action.

On Wednesday, a spokesperson with the Columbia Police Department said officers gave lifesaving first aid to the girl when they got to the scene. A car was also hit by gunfire.

Both juveniles are in custody at the Boone County Juvenile Office.

Due to the nearby shooting, Ridgeway Elementary School put their students on a "Hold and Secure." The incident also caused some to question the safety and security of the school.

Kevin Quinlan has a daughter that goes to school at Ridgeway. He said the call he got made him worried, but he knew his daughter was safe.

"Definitely terrified, but at the same time, I knew the school was ready for anything security-wise. So I felt confident in the school to do what they needed to do to protect my child," Quinlan said.

CPS sent information to the ABC 17 newsroom that breaks down their safety procedures and terminology. They have three levels of safety precautions that use when incidents occur.

CPS has a level one or "normal." This is the use of "Buzz-in systems."  doors are locked, and the door monitors check student IDs and visitors.

They have a level two or a "Hold and Secure." This means that no one can come in or go out. This also alerts that something is going on in the community or nearby area and police will let them know when it's safe.

The level three or "lockdown," is used when there is an imminent threat to the building and more safety measures will be taken. CPS also ensures in the information that "Our first priority is to keep all of students and staff safe during an incident or emergency situation."
