Tire comes off tractor-trailer, causing crash that shut down I-70

CALLAWAY COUNTY, Mo. (KMIZ)

A tire came off a tractor-trailer and hit another semi, causing a crash that shut down eastbound Interstate 70 early Thursday in Callaway County.

Eastbound traffic was being redirected off of Interstate 70 on Thursday because of the crash.

Major backups were forming as law enforcement directed traffic off of Exit 137 to Route J in Callaway County. The crash shut down westbound I-70 shortly before 1:30 a.m. Thursday.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a tractor-trailer driven by Ronald Spencer, 29, of Belleville, Illinois lost a tire and hit a second tractor-trailer driver by Larry Chalberg, 53, of Kansas City. Both vehicles went off the left side of the road and hit the median barrier cable, the patrol said. Chalberg's truck overturned and he suffered minor injuries.

Another crash happened later near the spot of the first crash but state troopers said it was minor.
