Suspect arrested in Lincoln University quadruple shooting
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KMIZ)
A suspect has been arrested in a shooting that injured four people on the Lincoln University campus Wednesday.
Jefferson City police arrested De'Angelo S. Hawley Jr., 19, of Kansas City, on Thursday evening, according to a news release. Officers arrested Hawley on suspicion of first-degree assault, armed criminal action and unlawful use of a weapon.
Lincoln's police chief told the university's board of curators Thursday that an early morning incident in a residence hall precipitated the shooting.
Chief Gary Hill told the Lincoln Board of Curators that police found out problems with visitors from Kansas City led to “several altercations” that morning. Several students were arrested on suspicion of peace disturbance and fighting. Police removed some students from campus, he said.
Some students and the visitors from Kansas City later started shooting in the parking lot at The Linc in retaliation for the dorm fight, Hill told the curators.
Two of the four students hurt in the shooting have critical injuries, Hill said.
Lincoln police were the first at the scene followed by Jefferson City police, who have taken over the investigation. Jefferson City Police Department Lt. David Williams said Thursday that police were looking for suspects.
Hill said Lincoln police gave medical aid to the victims at the scene before turning the investigation over.
“We just didn't have the manpower at that time and we had been on for too long,” Hill said. “This is a situation where we could not make any mistakes."
Hill said the suspects are not in the Jefferson City area.
Hill told curators that policies about dorm visitors are adequate but students often don’t follow them. Residence halls are experiencing staff shortages, making enforcement of those rules more sporadic, he said.
Right now the campus is on lockdown with a no-visitation policy and police are enforcing quiet hours to ensure another incident doesn't happen, Hill said.
