Cole County Health Department reminds residents COVID-19 pandemic is not over

The amount of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Cole County went from 57 to 61 between Tuesday and Saturday.
Chezney Schulte, communicable disease coordinator with the Cole County Health Department, said the new cases could be travel-related or from community spread. However, the origin is unknown, Schulte said.
As of Monday, the Cole County Health Department's website said there were five active COVID-19 cases in the county and one coronavirus-related death.
The spokeswoman said even though the state has reopened, it's important to continue to practice good hygiene and stay home if possible.
"We understand that COVID-19 is here, and its probably not going anywhere for quite a while," Schulte said. "I'm hoping not to see a spike, but it's hard to predict what will happen."
Katie Ortbals with Snob Shop in Jefferson City said the store has some COVID-19 restrictions but isn't requiring patrons to wear face masks.
"We sanitize the store regularly, every time we use a dressing room it gets sanitized. We are cleaning high, low and in-between every day to keep everyone healthy," Ortbals said.
Coronavirus testing started at Algoa Correctional Center on March 12. The Missouri Department of Corrections website said there are no active cases at the prison. Testing at the Jefferson City Correctional Center is set to start on July 6.
According to the department's website, offenders who test positive are isolated from other inmates until they test negative. Prison workers who test positive are sent home on-leave and must test negative twice before returning to work, the website said.
