Deadlines approach for plates, licenses that expired in March and April

DMV in Columbia, Missouri

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Time is ticking for those who have taken advantage of the state's grace period for driver's license and license plate renewals.

State officials provided a 60-day grace period for renewing licenses and plates that expired in March and April. In the case of the March expiration date, the deadline is approaching quickly or, in the case of driver's licenses, might have already passed.

Those who do head to Columbia's north license office on Vandiver Drive will see social distancing measures in place.

Kim Mateny with the Vandiver location said the office has had to ask some people to wait outside their doors, then be called in as people are served inside.

The office has also been using plexiglass shields and roping off seating in the lobby. Mateny said the wait time has only been around 10 minutes for most people.

Lisa Bowen, who is new to Columbia, visited the office Thursday and said she didn't run into any issues renewing her license.

The Department of Revenue, which oversees license offices, said people won't need any additional documents because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Under the grace period, plates that expired in March must be renewed by the end of this month to avoid a penalty. Plates that expired in April can be renewed until the end of June without penalty.

Driver's licenses must be renewed 60 days from their exact expiration date to avoid penalties.
