Columbia shooting victim target of ‘rival gang,’ according to police

A Columbia man that survived a September shooting faces felony drug charges after officers say they found drugs on him while treating his wounds.
Sam Baldwin IV faces two counts of possession of a controlled substance following a shooting on Sept. 13 in central Columbia. Baldwin was injured and 18-year-old Nadria Wright died. Javion Lawhorn-Wallace faces felony murder and assault charges for the shooting.
A probable cause statement written by Detective Alan Mitchell said that Baldwin had been involved in "multiple shootings and in drug dealing," and claimed that he was the target of "a rival gang" in the shooting.
A probable cause statement filed on Sept. 24 by Columbia police detective Alan Mitchell said an officer saw medics removing Baldwin's clothing to treat his wounds at Providence and Sexton Road. A medic found a plastic bag in Baldwin's underwear, the statement said, which the officer took. The bag was put back in the driver's seat of the car.
Police later served a search warrant for the car and took the bag. The bag contained 6.8 grams of MDMA and 1.29 grams of heroin, Mitchell wrote.
The statement called Wright a "criminally uninvolved" passenger of the car.
Police made a similar claim in charges filed against Lawhorn-Wallace. Officers wrote that Lawhorn-Wallace and Baldwin were on "opposing sides of a feud," but did not say what the feud involved.
A judge issued a no bond warrant for Baldwin's arrest on Sept. 24. Court records do not show that Baldwin has been arrested for the drug charges yet.
Boone County Assistant Prosecutor Christopher Shelton told ABC 17 News that no other charges against Baldwin related to the shooting have been referred to his office.
