Tracking a searing hot start to the week

THIS AFTERNOON: Dangerously hot, with a heat index between 100 and 108 across the area. Air quality may decline to moderate levels, meaning those with asthma or other allergies could be affected.

TONIGHT: Temperatures will be slow to cool overnight, remaining in the 80s through midnight. Lows fall to the 70s early tomorrow.

EXTENDED: Brutal heat and humidity will linger for one more day on Tuesday, despite a cold front and a few showers in the morning. The heat index may flirt with the 100 degree mark but humidity will gradually decrease throughout the day as the front passes. Conditions will be much better midweek, with below average temperatures in the low 80s and lower humidity on Wednesday and Thursday. Rain chances return by Thursday night, keeping temperatures cooler through Friday, but summer heat looks to return by the weekend.
