COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

The Mizzou softball team added a new assistant to the coaching staff, on Tuesday.

Tiger Athletics announced that former Ohio State assistant coach Matthew Guemmer will be joining head coach Larissa Anderson's staff, after he spent two seasons with the Buckeyes. However, it will not be his first stint in Columbia, as the De Soto, Missouri native graduated from MU and served as a student manager for the softball team for two seasons.

In his new role with the Tigers, he will oversee the outfield defense and have recruiting oversight.

"Bringing Matt back to Mizzou is a tremendous addition for our program. He is a Tiger through and through, and his passion for this university, our softball program and the people of Missouri runs deep. Matt was part of our program in 2012 and 2013, and since then he has established himself as one of the most respected coaches in the country through successful tenures at Virginia Tech, Rutgers and Ohio State," Coach Anderson said in a press release. "His experience, work ethic and ability to build meaningful relationships will have an immediate impact on our student-athletes. We are excited to welcome him home and know he will play an important role in the future of Mizzou Softball."

Guemmer will be joining Tiger softball after a successful run with Ohio State, where he played a key role in the Buckeyes' 45-14-1 record in 2025. He was a member of a Buckeye staff that was recognized as the best in the nation by Softball American and the best in the Great Lakes Region by the NFCA.

In his first season in Columbus, in 2025, Guemmer helped lead a group that had the nation's top statisical offense, as they led the country in home runs, runs scored, slugging percentage and walks.

Before he joined OSU, Guemmer also made another Big Ten stop at Rutgers from 2023-24. In his time with the Scarlet Knights, he coached the outfield and assisted with other defensive roles. He helped lead Rutgers to back-to-back 30-win seasons for the first time in the program's history and placed an outfielder on the Big Ten All-Defensive Team in both of the campaigns.

Guemmer also spent three seasons as an assistant coach at SEMO from 2020-22, where he helped guide the Redhawks to back-to-back 30-win seasons, a 39-16 Ohio Valley Conference record and the 2021 OVC regular-season title. While he was Cape Girardeau, he coached the outfielder and served as the defensive and hitting coach.

He's also coached at the high school level in Missouri, at his alma mater - De Soto High School. He complied a 76-34 overall record as the team's head coach and won three district championships.

This hire comes after former assistant coach Jason Gwyn left Coach Anderson's staff for an assistant coaching job at the University of Kansas.
