Mizzou soccer ends season opener in stalemate with South Dakota State
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
The Mizzou soccer team opened up the 2025 season with a draw against South Dakota State, on Monday, as the Tigers allowed the Jackrabbits to knot up the game with a little more than 10 minutes to go.
Sophomore Ava Vetter netted the first goal of the season for her team, off an assist from fellow sophomore Emily Derucki. That score in the 42nd minute gave the Tigers some confidence and a 1-0 lead in the season opener.
After the break, things went quite until the 79th minutes. Although junior goalkeeper Kate Phillips ended up with four saves, she couldn't hold off South Dakota State forever. Sophomore Mia Bosch worked her way into the box and dished a pass to Hailee Christensen, who got it just past Phillips for the game-tying goal.
Overall, South Dakota State out-shot Mizzou 11-6, as head coach Stefanie Golan's team only placed two shots on goal to the Jackrabbits' six.
Up next - Mizzou will look for its first win of the 2025 campaign when Youngstown State comes to Columbia on Wednesday, Aug. 20. The game is slated to start at 7 p.m. at Audrey J. Walton Stadium.
