Royals avoid getting swept in Minnesota with extra-innings win over Twins

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (KMIZ)

After a frustrating weekend in Minnesota, the Kansas City Royals had the last laugh against the Twins in an extra innings victory, on Sunday.

Skipper Matt Quatraro and company avoided getting swept with a gritty, 2-1 at Target Field in 10 innings. It was a game defined by pitching and defense for both teams.

Kansas City starter Kris Bubic didn't get out of the gates exactly how he would've hoped, allowing one run to come home in the first inning off an RBI single from Ty France. However, after that one mistake, Bubic settled into the ball game and had a stellar outing. In his seven innings of work, he only allowed that one earned run, scattering two hits and striking out nine Minnesota batters.

The 27-year-old is continuing a breakout campaign. Bubic holds a 1.22 ERA through his last seven starts and a 1.45 ERA through the entire 2025 season.

However, the Twins had a guy with a standout outing of his own on the bump. Right-hander Bailey Ober held a shutout into the seventh inning, as he struck out three batters. But, his mistake did prove costly for Minnesota, as Freddy Fermin's game-tying RBI double set up a pretty dramatic finish.

Minnesota and Kansas City were in a stalemate until the 10th inning, when a game defined by defense ended on an error. In that final inning, KC's Maikel Garcia ripped a single down the left field line, but it was a throwing error to home plate, that allowed Nick Loftin to get in for the game-winning run.

With Sunday's win in the series finale, the Royals improved to 29-25 overall and broke up a two-game skid.

Up next - Kansas City will return home to host the Cincinnati Reds in a three-game set. First pitch is game one is set for 3:10 p.m. on Monday, May 26.
