St. Louis man dead after Thursday shooting in parking lot of Lakeview Mall in Boone County

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

The Boone County Sheriff's Office confirmed Friday morning that one person died after a shooting in the parking lot of Lakeview Mall.

Cpt. Brian Leer with the sheriff's office said the shooting happened Thursday night in the parking lot after a disagreement inside Jakes Bar and Grill.

One man was taken to the hospital where he later died from their injuries, Leer said. A sheriff's office news release posted on Facebook later Friday morning said the man was a 42-year-old from St. Louis.

The release says the shooting started with an argument inside the bar.

It was not clear Friday morning if anyone was in custody. The sheriff's office release says investigators are looking for witnesses to interview.

Deputies put up crime scene tape Thursday night at the Lakeview Mall in the 5600 block of Clark Lane.

A witness at the scene had told ABC 17 News that one person was found outside of Jake's Bar and Grill with gunshot wounds.

At least a half-dozen Boone County Sheriff’s deputies were on the scene searching the area with flashlights. A large area of the parking lot was roped off by police tape.

An ambulance was on the scene when ABC 17 News reporters arrived before 9:50 p.m. Missouri State Highway Patrol troopers, Columbia police officers and Boone County firefighters were also at the scene earlier in the night.

Patrons were still at Jake's Bar and Grill as law enforcement investigated the area at 10:20 p.m. Patrons at the bar said law enforcement told everyone to stay inside the bar while they investigated.

Deputies began pulling down crime scene tape at 10:34 p.m. Deputies put a number of boxes into the back of a patrol vehicle.

In 2021, the area was the site of a fatal shooting.
