Mizzou Cotton Bowl appearance means windfall for SEC

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

The SEC and Mizzou Athletics can expect a financial windfall from the Tigers' appearance in the Cotton Bowl.

No. 9 Mizzou will play No. 7 Ohio State in the program's first Cotton Bowl appearance since the 2013 season.

Each conference will get $4 million for every team that plays in a New Year's Six bowl and $6 million for a team playing in the playoffs, according to the Business of College Sports. That means the SEC will get approximately $12 million due to Mizzou, Georgia, and Ole Miss participating in this year's New Year Six bowl games and an additional $6 million because of Alabama's selection into the playoffs.

The SEC will also get $2.85 million for every game a team from its conference is competing in to cover expenses.

It's not clear how much Mizzou will receive for its appearance. The SEC will distribute bowl payouts equally amongst the 14 schools early 2024.

Per the College Football Playoff, its revenue distribution plan is based off calculations from the 2022-2023 season.
