COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Columbia Public Schools – in an email to parents – stated that Grant Elementary first grade teacher Caroline Dill died in a car accident on Tuesday night.

A CPS spokesperson told ABC 17 News in an email that two separate letters were sent to parents. Students have yet to be informed by the school and counselors will be in Dill’s class on Friday.

According to CPS, Dill was a first-year teacher at Grant Elementary. She completed her student teaching last year at Grant.

“We will not be informing students at this time. We have sent a separate letter to parents of students in Ms. Dill’s class. We thought it was important that parents and guardians have the opportunity to have this conversation with their student this afternoon/evening. We will have counselors in Ms. Dill’s class tomorrow (Friday), as well as counselors for any other student who is experiencing tough emotions. We know that students who were in Ms. Dill’s class in second grade, when she was a student teacher, will also be affected by this news,” the email reads.

KCTV5 in Kansas City initially reported on Thursday morning that the Missouri State Highway Patrol responded on Wednesday morning to a call about someone being inside a vehicle submerged in the Missouri River.

This story is developing.
