MSHP Crime Dashboard reports 65 gun crime victims in Columbia this year

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

The Missouri State Highway Patrol Crime Dashboard for gun-related crimes shows that there have been 104 cases with 65 victims reported by the Columbia Police Department this year.

The dashboard updates daily and comprises statistics reported by each department, including the Columbia Police Department.

However, MSHP shows that gun-related crimes in Columbia are down 74.32% compared to 2022, where there were 405 reported cases for the entire year. In 2022, there were 253 victims, including 24 under the age of 10.

In 2023, there have been 65 victims of gun crimes -- according to the data -- reported in ages ranging from 10 years old to 65 years and older.

  • Seven victims between the ages of 10-17.
  • 12 victims between the ages of 18-24.
  • 23 victims between the ages of 25-34.
  • Eight victims between the ages of 35-44.
  • Six victims between the ages of 45-54.
  • Six victims between the ages of 55-64.
  • Three victims 65-and-older.

There have been 73 gun-related offenders, according to the data, in Columbia in 2023.

  • Eight offenders between the ages of 10-17.
  • 18 offenders between the ages of 18-24.
  • 30 offenders between the ages of 25-34.
  • Four offenders between the ages of 35-44.
  • Three offenders between the ages of 45-54.
  • Nine offenders between the ages of 55-64.
  • One offender 65- and over.

Gun crimes predominantly happen at residences, roads/parking/camps, and commercial property.

  • 37.5% or 39 shootings happened at a residence.
  • 31.7% or 33 shootings happened at a road/parking/camps.
  • 27.9% or 29 shootings happened on Commercial Property.
  • One shooting happened at an educational facility.
  • One shooting happened at a Government/Public Building and others.
  • One shooting happened at "others."

The University of Missouri Police Department has had just two cases involving guns this year within its jurisdiction, which is down from six cases in 2022. No victims were reported, and both offenders were in the 35-44 age range. One incident occurred near an educational facility, while another occurred near a road/parking/camp distinction.

Boone County Sheriff's Office data

The Boone County Sheriff's Office has had 50 cases this year that have resulted in eight victims.

  • One victim under the age of 10.
  • Two victims between the ages of 10-17
  • Three victims between the ages of 25-34
  • Three victims between the ages of 35-44

The Sheriff's Office has had 39 gun-related offenders, according to the data, in Boone County in 2023.

  • Five offenders between the ages of 10-17
  • Seven offenders between the ages of 18-24
  • 16 offenders between the ages of 25-34
  • Five offenders between the ages of 35-44
  • Five offenders between the ages of 45-54
  • One offender between the ages of 55-64

Crimes predominantly occurred at residences and road/parking/camps.

  • 56% -- or 28 -- happened at a residence.
  • 42% -- or 21 -- happened at a road/parking/camp
  • 2% -- or 1 -- happened at a commercial property.
