Versailles woman charged with endangering welfare of a child

VERSAILLES, Mo. (KMIZ)

A Versailles woman has been charged with endangering the welfare of a child after a Versailles Police Officer observed the conditions at the house where she lived created a risk for two children.

A warrant was issued Wednesday for Kristin Nelson, 39, and a $10,000 bond is set. She is not in custody, according to Morgan County Jail records. A court date has not been set.

Versailles police were dispatched to a home on July 7 for a disturbance and saw Nelson allegedly intoxicated and distraught in the front yard of a home, according to the probable cause statement. Nelson was eventually brought to an area hospital for treatment.

Police were granted permission to enter the home and noticed rodent feces on the floor, a toilet overflowing with human excrement, holes in the floor, open prescription bottles, loose pills on the floor, open alcohol containers, trash scattered everywhere (including in a crib where twin babies supposedly sleep), according to the statement.

A razor and broken glass were seen on the front steps of the house. Police noted in the probable cause statement there were other conditions at the home that made them sick to their stomach. Police allegedly had to stop the children from eating trash in the yard.

Nelson allegedly told police that she was OK with the children staying with another person she knew.

A man at the residence – whose name was redacted in the probable cause statement -- allegedly told police he was fixing up the place, but construction was not seen by law enforcement. The statement claims the man was squatting in the building.

DFS visits were scheduled and Nelson was eventually released from the hospital. Nelson allegedly called police again on July 10 and police conducted a wellness check, according to the statement. She had her children back allegedly before she was supposed to, the statement says.

Nelson allegedly told the officer a DFS worker told her certain conditions had to be met, and that she met them. The officer said in the statement that conditions were about the same as the prior days, if not worse. The babies were then taken in by DFS, the statement says.
