Sheriff’s office identifies men killed in Boone County crash

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Two men, one from Columbia and one from Fulton, were killed in an early Wednesday crash southeast of Columbia, the Boone County Sheriff's Office said Thursday.

Steve Drupp, 34, of Fulton, and Jason Logsdon, 41, of Columbia, were killed when their vehicles collided head-on in the 7700 block of East New Haven Road a little before 6 a.m. Wednesday.

The sheriff's office didn't detail how the head-on crash happened, noting that the cause of the crash is still being investigated.

Drupp had two children in his vehicle. Capt. Brian Leer, of the Boone County Sheriff's Office, said one child was in a booster seat, and the other in a car seat. The age of the children was not released, as of Thursday night. One of the children was taken to University Hospital for treatment, while the other was airlifted to a hospital in St. Louis to be treated for more severe injuries.

Logsdon was alone at the time of the crash.

Both men were pronounced dead at the scene. Neither were wearing seatbelts, the sheriff's office said. Boone County Fire Assistant Chief Gale Blomenkamp said in this case, he doesn't believe a seatbelt would have made a difference in saving the men's lives.

"Seatbelts do save lives, they do lessen the injuries typically," Blomenkamp said. "But when you're talking a head-on collision at those speeds and the amount of damage that those cars had, it would be very difficult to survive that whether you had a seatbelt on or not"

He also added that ensuring your children are in proper restraints is vital.

"It's probably what saved their lives yesterday," Blomenkamp said. For adults you should buckle up, I mean everybody should be wearing a seatbelt. I would take my chances with a seatbelt before I take my chances without it."

Neighbors who witnessed the crash said people frequently speed on the road. However, the sheriff's office could not confirm if speeding was a contributing factor in this crash. Leer and Blomenkamp also said there is not a history of crashes on the road

The crash closed the road for more than two hours.
