Two die in Boone County crash

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Two people died Wednesday morning in a crash southeast of Columbia.

At 6:22 a.m safety workers responded to a reported vehicle accident on New Haven Road, Gale Blomenkamp of the Boone County Fire Protection District, told ABC 17.  When units arrived on the scene they they found two vehicles in a head on collision One car was carrying two children. Both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities were still working late Wednesday morning to notify next of kin so they have not released names, Capt. Brian Leer with the Boone County Sheriff's Office said.

Leer added that the two juveniles riding in the vehicles were taken to a hospital for treatment.

A man who lives near the crash scene told an ABC 17 News reporter that he heard the vehicles collided head-on from inside his home and compared the sound to a "sonic boom."

The wife of another neighbor who lives across the street from the crash told ABC 17 that the car carrying the two juveniles veered into the wrong lane resulting in the head-on collision. She added that her husband rushed outside to try and help before safety workers arrived on scene.

The road was closed at South Ben Williams Road for about two hours after the crash.
