Death investigation underway after body found at downtown parking garage

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Columbia Police blocked off a section of Walnut Street next to the Fifth and Walnut parking garage for several hours Saturday.

Witnesses told ABC 17 they saw a man perched outside the perimeter fence on the top level of the structure around 1:30 today. The area was blocked off for about three hours, starting just after noon.

Authorities on scene told ABC 17 there had been a death. Police said a medical examiner was coming to investigate.

Columbia Police Spokesperson told ABC 17 crews there is no threat to the public. ABC 17 News has reached out to the city for more information.

Several people have jumped to their deaths at the garage in the past.

In March, the city finished a $911,000 safety project on the garage. The construction was split into two phases, the first was a 10.5-feet-tall fencing added around the top floor. The second cost $488,000 and panels were installed on the fifth through eighth floors.

Access to the top levels of the parking garage was closed since Sept. 10, 2021 until construction was finished. All floors of the garage were opened March 24.
