COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

The City of Columbia announced in a Wednesday press release that steel panels will be installed at the parking garage located at Fifth and Walnut streets.

The panels will be placed in window opening on levels five through eight. The project begins Monday, Feb. 27 and is expected to be completed by Friday, March 24.

The city said parking will be mostly unaffected, but some spaces may be inaccessible while crews are working. Signs will be posted.

The window barriers are part of a two-phase fall-prevention project at the parking structure, the press release states. Phase one, which involved building 10.5 foot fencing along the perimeter of the roof, was completed at a cost of $488,000. Phase two, which involves the installation of steel panels to cover approximately 150 openings, will cost $423,000.

Access to the top levels of the parking garage have been closed since Sept. 10, 2021. Discussions about the parking garage have gone on for years. Several people have jumped to their deaths at the location.
