Columbia man charged with murder in relation to weekend Business Loop 70 shooting

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

A Columbia man has now been charged with murder in relation to the shooting death of Melvin Hooker III on Sunday near Plush Lounge in the 900 block of East Business Loop 70.

Kimo Spivey, 33, is charged with second-degree murder, armed-criminal action, unlawful use of a weapon and unlawful possession of a gun. He is being held without bond at the Boone County Jail.

Spivey appeared via Zoom for his initial court appearance at Tuesday at the Boone County Courthouse. He was denied bond and has his next court date scheduled for 1:00 p.m. Thursday at the Boone County Courthouse.

At approximately 2:15 a.m. Sunday, Columbia police responded to the scene for a report of multiple shots fired. Hooker was declared dead at the scene. 

A witness allegedly told police Hooker was involved in an argument with a group of people and then went to the passenger side door of his car to get a gun, according to the probable cause statement.  

The witness then allegedly told police that Spivey approached her and Hooker with a gun in his hand. The two exchanged words and then she allegedly told police she saw “Spivey shoot and kill Hooker,” according to the statement. 

Spivey also had a gunshot wound and was taken to University Hospital.

Spivey has charges in another case, including second-degree domestic assault and third-degree assault. A hearing for that case is set for 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Boone County Courthouse, according to Casenet.

He previously pleaded guilty to second-degree assault in 2014 and was sentenced to three years in the Missouri Department of Corrections.

Steven Wayne Grimes, 25, of Columbia, was also arrested Sunday. According to Boone County Sheriff's Office online records, he is accused of tampering with physical evidence and unlawful use of a weapon. He was released on bond.
