JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KMIZ)

The Cole County Sheriff said one person shot inside the county jail was treated and is back in custody.

Sheriff John Wheeler said in a tweet the shooting victim was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Wheeler said no officers were involved.

It's unclear if more than one inmate was involved in the shooting.

"We don't know if it was two inmates, or if it was one inmate and it was self-inflicting, we just don't know," Wheeler said.

Wheeler spoke about the ongoing investigation Monday. A video of the conference can be watched in the media player below.

According to Wheeler, investigators are working to find out how a gun got inside the jail.

"We have to find out what's going on, what broke down to allow a weapon inside the jail," Wheeler said.

This is a developing story, check back for updates.
