Plow crews continue to work on Columbia roads

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

The city of Columbia Public Works Department's snow response crew is set to continue to work throughout the day Friday as many roads in the city are still snow-covered.

According to a press release, public works management expects roads across Columbia to be passable by Friday night.

In another press release Friday morning, the city said 85% of roadways were deemed passable, meaning at least one travel lane is accessible for a front wheel drive vehicle traveling at speeds well below the normal posted speed limits.

Crews expect salt applied to roadways to begin to work Friday afternoon as temperatures are set to reach the 30's.

Snow plows will continue work Friday on residential streets in Columbia, also attending to priority routes if needed.

As of 3 a.m. Friday, crews were downtown hauling off snow with roads being blocked off for short periods of time. The city advises avoiding trucks and backhoes if encountered downtown and finding a different route.

The city is relying primarily on plowing during the morning hours, due to salt losing its effectiveness in the single-digit temperatures.

Residents are still being cautioned before hitting the roads Friday, with the city asking those to remain indoors if at all possible.
