Insider Blog: Why flooding is so dangerous

Excessive rainfall has recently brought widespread chances for flooding to Mid-Missouri with more possible further into August. Some localized areas have seen instances of half a foot of rain falling in a few hours, which can bring flash floods in just minutes. It's important not to take these events lightly, as flooding is an underestimated threat compared to other weather events.

Flooding is among the top two weather-related fatalities, only behind the heat. This puts it above the cold, lightning, and tornadoes. Over the last ten years, rip current fatalities follow closely behind flooding, highlighting how many don't take water seriously. When it comes to flooding, it's important to never drive over any covered roadways. It takes only a half foot of water to sweep a person away, and 12 inches of rain can float a vehicle. Flooding can occur very quickly so remain aware and take it slow on roads during rain.
