Why Mid-Missouri is seeing strong winds

The majority of Monday has seen strong winds making their way into the 30 mph range at times. These strong winds are expected to carry over lasting through mid-week as the region sits between a high pressure system to the southeast and a low pressure system to the northwest.

The white lines on the ABC 17 Stormtrack Futuretrack are known as isobars. These lines represent equal lines of pressure. Areas where these lines are located closer together represents a greater change in pressure over a shorter distance helping meteorologist find areas of strong winds.

The warmer temperatures felt across Mid-Missouri are due to the wind direction pulling from the southwest. This is pulling air from Texas and Oklahoma north, increasing temperatures into the 80 degree range.

Tuesday looks to continue to see a large change in pressure overhead in a short distance leading to stronger winds remaining across the region. Wind gusts in open areas could potentially reach into the upper 20s and mid-30s.
