Insider Blog: Arctic blast sets in for Chiefs football tomorrow
A strong low pressure system that brought a quick hit of snow to Mid-Missouri also moved through Kansas City, opening the door to arctic air that sticks around through the weekend.
The Kansas City Chiefs will match up with the Dolphins on Saturday night, marking one of the coldest games ever played in the NFL.
According to FOX 4 in Kansas City, the coldest game ever played at Arrowhead happened on December 18, 1938 when the Chiefs took on the Broncos for the final game of the regular season. The temperature was 1 degree above zero with a wind chill of -19.
Strong wind gusts could send the wind chill even further below zero on Saturday, with tailgating feels like temperatures around 20 degrees below zero.
Winds could gust to 30 mph in the evening, with kickoff wind chills around -25 degrees.
It's important to highlight that not only will the players have to withstand the cold, but those tailgating and viewing the game from inside the stadium will be exposed to a serious frostbite risk if skin is uncovered for more than 20 minutes. When wind chills dip cooler than -20, frost bite can set in in less than 30 minutes. If you do plan on braving the conditions, it's imperative you bundle up with hat, gloves, and heavy coat, along with insulated boots. Hand warmers would be a good idea. Stay hydrated with water and hot liquids like tea or hot chocolate.
