Tracking rounds of snow, impacts Thursday and Friday

TONIGHT: Mostly cloudy with lows in the upper 20s.

TOMORROW: Snow showers moving in from the west in the morning for areas along and north of I-70, with a second round expected by late afternoon and evening for points south. Temperatures remain near the freezing mark during the day.

EXTENDED: Strong low pressure is pushing across the Plains tonight in conjunction with strong low-level winds in the atmosphere, sending tons of moisture in our direction. With cold temperatures locked in overnight, we'll start to see snow falling across by northwest Missouri Thursday morning, and spread east/southeast along a front that is draped across Mid-Missouri tonight. As that front slides south across the state on Thursday, we'll see additional development of snow showers along the boundary Thursday night into Friday. This is why we'll have two distinct areas with different snow start times. Areas north of I-70 will likely see snow falling starting in the morning, while areas south will be largely dry for the morning commute. Snow starts to filter in later by late afternoon into the evening and continues through Friday morning for the southern half of Mid-Missouri. Most of the area will receive 2-4" of snow, with slightly higher amounts across northwestern counties out toward Marshall, Brunswick, and Macon.

Even with snow coming to an end Friday afternoon, we could still see impacts on the roads if they're left untreated into Friday night. Temperatures drop into the teens Friday night, but we should see some improvement with more sunshine on Saturday. Highs Saturday will be about 20 degrees cooler than normal, but Sunday looks amazing with highs getting back into the upper 50s. Next week is off to a mild start with a stretch of 60s expected. We'll be keeping a close eye on the potential for a few showers Monday night, and a potential storm system that could bring a mixed bag of precipitation late next week.
