Tracking a few storms tomorrow, widespread rain Sunday night

TONIGHT: Partly to mostly cloudy and mild with gusty winds. Lows in the low 50s.

TOMORROW: Breezy and mostly cloudy with highs in the lower 70s. A few storms possible by late afternoon and evening. Gusty winds could reach up to 35 mph during the day and night.

EXTENDED: Clouds try to break up overnight, but thanks to gusty south winds we'll see lows remaining in the 50s. Tomorrow is warm and breezy but not as dry as moisture starts to stream in ahead of a cold front that will move through Saturday night. Highs reach the low 70s with cloud cover and wind gusts up to 35 mph. Given higher dew points and an extreme amount of wind shear, there's a conditional threat for a couple strong storms toward late afternoon and evening, but the lack of instability and presence of a temperature inversion may keep storms from becoming numerous. The highest threat still looks to be centered across Iowa. On Sunday, temperatures drop into the 30s in the morning behind the front and only make it to the low 50s during the day with the cold front stalled out over southern Missouri. We'll stay dry through most of the day, but a disturbance will track up along the front toward evening, sending widespread heavy rain and a few thunderstorms all across Mid-Missouri through Sunday night. Rain amounts could get between 1-1.5", but the severe weather threat will be centered over southern Missouri and Arkansas. As cold air rushes in Monday morning, there could be some lingering precipitation that briefly turns over to light snowfall through mid-afternoon. I'm not expecting more than a dusting on the grass for the northern half of the area. Most of next week is quiet and seasonable, but another front on the leading edge of an upper level low pressure system will bring a chance for more precipitation potentially of the wintry variety Thursday into Friday. Behind that front, northwest winds aloft will send in some unseasonably cold air as temperatures fall to the 30s for highs by Friday.
