Tracking dangerous temperatures, frigid wind chills overnight

TONIGHT: Mostly cloudy, windy, and frigid with lows in the single digits. Wind chills falling to -5 to -10.

TOMORROW: Mostly sunny and cold with highs in the upper teens. Wind chills in the single digits.

EXTENDED: A Weather Alert Day is in effect late tonight through midday Friday for dangerously cold low temperatures and wind chills. Clouds have settled into the region, but will be no match for the Canadian high pressure system that will be settling across the Midwest through late week. Temperatures tonight drop into the low single digits, but winds increase to 20-25 mph, bringing the wind chill to about -8 to -10 overnight. It will be too cold for kids that have school tomorrow to hang out at the bus stop outside for too long. Winds stay in the 5-10 mph range tomorrow, keeping our wind chills in the single digits as the actual air temperature hangs out below 20 degrees. Friday is another cold morning but winds will be much calmer, keeping wind chills in the -2 to 0 readings. As high pressure slides east, winds will briefly shift west/southwest enough over the weekend to get us into the upper 30s and low 40s through Sunday. Monday starts off next week warmer in the mid-40s, but overall next week is looking cooler than average with a series of clipper systems sliding through that will reinforce the cold air and perhaps bring a few flurries if they can tap into some moisture; although that looks more likely off to our north.
