Flooding expected throughout Mid-Missouri as storms roll in Sunday

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Mid-Missouri is bracing for a round of potentially severe weather, with potential flooding impacts as rain is expected throughout the day Sunday.

In Columbia, multiple roads have been prone to flooding in the recent months including:

  • Strawn Road
  • Creasy Springs
  • Old Plank
  • Gillespie Bridge
  • Orr Road
  • Blackfoot Road

MoDOT has guidance on its website for drivers on how to stay safe while encountering flooded roads.

The department is reminding drivers to turn around and find an alternate route if encountering rising floodwaters and to never attempt to cross a flooded road.

If caught in rising waters, MoDOT advises drivers to immediately leave their vehicle and find higher ground. Many flood-related deaths are caused by drivers attempting to move a stalled car, according to the website.

The department is also warning drivers on the dangers of flood waters, stating just two feet of water can float a car and water moving two miles per hour can sweep a car off a road.
