Tracking strong winds and a few storms later tonight

TONIGHT: Mostly cloudy and breezy with a chance for scattered storms. South winds between 15-25 mph with gusts up to 45 mph. Lows in the upper 30s to around 40.

TOMORROW: Mostly sunny and cooler with highs in the upper 40s to around 50.

EXTENDED: Wind gusts have remained around 40 mph or below, but could pick up a bit more into this evening. We're also in the lowest severe risk tonight with the better environment for severe winds and tornadoes across much of Iowa closer to the low pressure system. That said, there could be some heavy downpours and isolated gusts up to 60 mph for our western counties as the line of storms works in from the northwest after 7:00 p.m.. With the loss of daytime heating, storm intensity will drop as the cold front works its way east, with storms exiting before midnight in our eastern counties. Rain amounts will likely be under 0.25" given how fast the storms will be moving through. Winds will finally diminish overnight, with sustained winds between 15-25 mph through morning. Winds shift to the northwest, bringing us into the upper 30s by morning. We'll see sunshine and highs near 50 Thursday afternoon, with clouds building in by evening. Another front sets up to our south on Friday, bringing a chance for showers through much of the day, especially south of I-70. We clear out for the weekend but it's cold with winds aloft shifting northwest. Highs on Saturday make the upper 30s with lows in the teens on Sunday morning. Expect sunshine on Sunday with highs in the lower 40s. Looking ahead to next week, we're looking fairly quiet with the possibility of a few showers Monday night into Tuesday and highs in the lower 50s.
